Google is going to create a separate mobile index within few months

Currently, Google use a single index of web documents for search. Google’s Search Analyst Gary Illyes announced that they are planning on releasing a separate mobile search index, which will become the primary one and desktop index will be secondary then.

Now, Google is about to create a separate mobile index within this month, separate mobile index that will be the main or “primary” index that the search engine uses to respond to queries. A separate desktop index will be maintained too, but desktop index will not be as up-to-date as the mobile index.

The news came today during a keynote address from Gary Illyes, a webmaster trends analyst dedicated to creating a better search experience for users Working at Google, at PubCon on Wednesday 12th Oct 2016

Tweets from his announcement shed a bit of light on the coming change:

Google first announced about mobile index at last year SMX that it was experimenting idea of a separate mobile index .Since that time, Google’s decided that a mobile index makes sense in order to provide fast, quick and mobile friendly result for users searching from mobile devices and Google started moving ahead with the idea.

It’s still not clear that exactly how the mobile index will work. May be google will provide results from mobile index to mobile and from desktop index to user searching from desktop. For example, since the mobile index is the “primary” index, will it really not be used for any desktop queries? Will it only contain “mobile-friendly” content? How out-of-date will the desktop index be? Desktop usage is now a minority of Google queries but still generates substantial usage as working people from office and home search from desktop.

The most important change will likely be that by having a mobile index, Google can run its ranking algorithm in a different way across pure mobile content rather than the current method that extracts data from desktop content to determine mobile rankings on SERP’s.
